Livestock Producer Survey Report

In 2023, we mailed thousands of independent owner-operators of cattle and hog farms in Missouri a 4-page survey about their operations. We wanted to hear directly from producers during the Farm Bill debate because federal policies directly impact day to day life for farmers, dictating how, when and what they can and will use their land for over the coming years.

Our Goals

  • To understand the current challenges and opportunities for Missouri farmers
  • To Learn about how (and what types) of farmers are or are not accessing different Federal programs
  • To gather producer Farm Bill priorities and possible solutions to inform our policy platform and messaging

We received over 1,300 responses from all corners of the state with approximately 1,275 included in complete analysis. Now, we want to share some of the highlights of what we learned.

Top Concerns For Livestock Operations

  • Processing wait times – over the pandemic these increased statewide but continue to vary greatly based on location, type and size of operation, and season.
  • Drought assistance – it was the most listed resource that was both helpful and in demand. As we continue to face increasingly extreme weather challenges, getting both education and resources to farmers to mitigate and prevent the harmful impact of drought on their operation is a top concern.

Solutions for the Farm Bill

  1. Congress should restore mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for meat.
  2. Congress should put a pause on new mergers of food and agribusiness, review the impact of past mergers and break-up monopolies that have harmed competition.
  3. Congress should support updated antitrust rules and stronger enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act (PSA).
