From 2013-2021, solely through USDA’s Agriculture Marketing Service, U.S. taxpayers have bought $741,177,717 worth of meat from JBS, a Brazilian corporation, the biggest meatpacker in the world, and a corporation with numerous cases of price fixing, bribing elected officials, antitrust violations, labor violations, etc. etc.
This is a PRIME example of why we need to STRENGTHEN & ENFORCE antitrust laws, stop foreign multinational corporations from owning huge swaths of our food system, and put the POWER back in the hands of FAMILY FARMERS & CONSUMERS.
“This case highlights the urgency of USDA’s multi-billion efforts…to increase the competitive choices in meat and poultry processing — competition that would benefit taxpayers, consumers, and producers alike,” Vilsack wrote.
